The Comradery Alone Make Every Outing Worth It.
That's How We Roll
Lately it seems like I've been combatting sleep deprivation, but I swear one of these days, I'm going to wrestle that S.O.B. to the ground, pull a Hulk Hogan on him, and walk away with the title belt! Yes, really.
In all seriousness, like you, I make it a personal directive to work hard during the week and carry that momentum by playing hard on the weekends. I've been spending the bulk of my limited free time at the track with our C&O crew and Artis Houston, the front man of our Jan. '06 cover with his insanely sano and purpose-built, stock suspension- based '71 Nova. This year, Artis and I have made a combined effort to race in our local series with one nitrous-packing 598ci fat-block, which I'll debut next month (don't miss it-it's flat-out brutal!), only now we're involved with two sanctioning bodies with the intention of attending a few additional venues.
How are we doing? Well, we started off the season with a win in our class and discovered the ludicrous amount of power we still have on tap. Now some may call the first win a lucky break, but I'll beg to differ. We ran hard, made every round, and never gave up, and that's even when it seemed like the odds were against us.
Since then it's been a serious binge of trial and error, an endless number of test passes, and chasing the various gremlins that have plagued us. I can't forget to mention the extensive adjustments, more testing, and even more adjustments-and yes, we've already had to rebuild the bullet this season and we're only halfway through it. Are we sick of it yet? Not in the least bit.
If there's one thing I've learned this season, it's truly about teamwork, requiring everyone to work in unison. And as clich as it may be, whoever first coined "There is no I in team" is absolutely correct. I've gained new lifelong friendships, and from an editorial standpoint, I'm experiencing firsthand technical knowledge that wouldn't have happened otherwise. Beyond that, I'm having the time of my life and I plan on doing this for a long time-even if I have to deal with the minimal number of hours I get to shut my eyes.
That said, I'll raise my third cup of coffee and offer a fellow car guy cheer: Let me say that I respect each and every one of you who play with your cars-be it car shows, road racing, or hitting the strip-and above all are willing to get greasy on the weekends. Yup, we're all related by the wrench. Have a similar tale you'd like to share? I hope so, because I want to read it. Come on now, fire up the computer and send it my way at the address listed below.
