Tools Of Sort
I'm pretty organized at times, so I'm told. While I would like to agree with that, I have to admit when it comes to knowing where my tools are, I'm so far from organized it's pretty pathetic. Yes, I've heard plenty of stories of people proudly displaying their feathers when it comes to their tool collections; however, as impressive as that may be, I've seen many of those same tools whimpering to be used, only to collect dust.
That's right, I don't have a huge roll-away or even a snazzy little toolbox, I don't have a matching set of anything, and I don't have any of them placed neatly. In reality-sad as it may be-my tool collection consists of random pieces I've collected since college and from various last-minute auto parts store runs; you know, the $4.99 multipurpose screwdriver and the $9.95 tool sets, all of which are missing pieces. And, well, the nice pieces are from friends who just haven't returned to get them. (Great, I think with that last statement I'm about to make my collection a bit smaller.)
Where is it that I bestow my prized assorted possessions? Get ready-in a milk crate. I know, it may come across as a cardinal sin for most car guys. It certainly sounds sloppy, and it isn't aesthetically pleasing by any means, but it works. All right, I'll admit, sometimes a screwdriver or some of the smaller wrenches will fall through the holes, but it really isn't all that difficult to reach down and pick them up. And don't bother asking me where I got the crate, because I don't want it repossessed.
Don't get me wrong. I absolutely admire those killer roll-away boxes; I mean come on, who doesn't like knowing where to look for a specific tool? One thing's for sure; while it may sound sort of foolish, with my setup, rather than knowing immediately that I don't have a certain tool, there's a 50/50 chance that it's in my magic milk crate. It's kind of like my glass is half full rather than half empty-or is it? Still, if I don't have a particular wrench, socket, or screwdriver, I bet there's something in there that'll do the job. I'm sure one day I'll get my starter set, but until then, should you ever need to enlist a spare set of hands, you can bet I'll show up with a milk crate. I know I can't be the only one to do this, so why don't you send in pictures of your unconventional toolbox? If we print them, I'll exchange it for our newest Chevy High Performance license plate!
