The American Street Car Series Return to the Coast (RTTC) event has been the West Coast staple for corner carving, and each time we attend we are thoroughly impressed by the group of masterly crafted street machines in contention. Last year’s RTTC hosted some of the most agile-looking muscle cars we’ve seen in one place, and guess what, they were mostly Chevys.
Held at the decommissioned El Toro Air base in Irvine, California, this event is an ideal destination for muscle car hot shoes who want to prove they have the mettle and skill to outdrive the competition. Braking, horsepower, and your ability to have control of your vehicle are all tested in three stages that are set up by the ASCS: an autocross course, a speed-stop challenge, and a high-speed road course.
Basic rules require tires with a 200 treadwear rating, helmets are used at all times, and clipped cones grant a time penalty. Each driver is awarded points for placement in these three categories, and randomized head-to-head shootouts are held at the end of the event to determine a “King of the Hill”. If you like old Chevys that have been modified to handle like legendary sports cars, read on.
We’ve tested a lot of sneakers over the years and for this outing, we tried out Falken’s latest Azenis RT-615K tires. This is a motorsports-inspired tire with a 200 treadwear rating, making it perfectly legal for the American Street Car Series. Technically speaking, the Azenis RT-615K features an 8/32-tread design with a solid center rib that offers plenty of traction in both dry and wet conditions. A tire of this nature certainly sounds good on paper, but obviously, it’s the real-world evaluations that’ll dictate how popular the tire is. Frankly, Falken did their homework and produced one impressive DOT-approved track tire. From a performance standpoint, the RT-615Ks are phenomenal. They’re very predictable—just point them in the direction you want to go, stab the throttle, and enjoy the ride. How are they on the street? Let’s just say they’re extremely quiet; those who are sensitive to noise will appreciate this quality. From all aspects of traction to lateral grip and stopping, this is a fantastic tire that truly delivers as promised. —Henry D.
