That's how Monte received his Impala, via Arizona, from whence it came as a rust-free car. Other than some minor maintenance and the can't-go-wrong addition of 17-inch American Racing wheels and matching rubber, he tells us, this car was received as stock as the day it rolled off the line. That means it's packin' a 10.25:1 compression and a 325hp 396 big-block backed by a Turbo 400 tranny running the power back to a 3.36:1-geared differential. Other than that, Monte digs the basic-black top and the white interior livery that his big car sports-he suspects it's a rare combo. Then again, there's no doubt about the rarity of that factory A/C you'll find nestled under the hood next to that original Rat motor.

Ben Kares, 23, takes "The Heartbeat of America" seriously. Born with a heart defect, he now has a mechanical heart valve that makes a ticking sound. This inspired him while building his '73 Nova SS hatchback, including the "HARTICK" plate and reproductions of his own EKG pattern in the SS logos on the new upholstery. Other goodies so far includes a mild 350 with a Turbo 350 trans, and a 21/2-inch X-pipe exhaust. "It's a work in progress," says Ben, "But I enjoy taking her out, that's for sure."

Carlo's 'Velle is powered by a 460ci fat-block stuffed with a steel crank, KB pistons, ARP main studs, and a Lunati cam. The short-block was topped with a set of refreshed oval-port heads to create a 10.5:1 compression ratio. A Holley carb feeds it, an MSD ignition burns it, and a 7-quart Milodon oil pan helps keep it lubed. Power is transmitted through a Turbo 400 with a TCI converter and shift kit back to a 3.32:1-geared 12-bolt posi rear. The suspension comprises Eibach springs, Hotchkis components, and Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes peeking through Torq-Thrust II wheels.

Dave bought his Monte as a high-school grad back in 2002, and the stock 305 lump was quickly tossed in favor of a GM 350 H.O. Deluxe crate motor backed by the Monte's reprogrammed 200-4R trans and a 3.42:1 Regal T-type 8.5-inch 10-bolt rear rebuilt with an Eaton posi. Dave also tackled a TPI conversion utilizing a Howell speed-density harness and a Walbro fuel pump. The front suspension is a combo of Caprice spindles and calipers, 1lE Camaro brake rotors, and Hotchkis and Belltech components. The rear relies on UMI control arms, Moog springs, and Bilstein shocks.
