Air Zed
'79 Camaro Z28
Bob Janz
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

We get asked all the time about how to get a car in Chevy High. Well, sending us a cool picture of your car grabbing air is certainly a good way to start! Bob is only the second owner of this Zed, as they call them up north. The car got a whole new drivetrain last winter, starting with a GM 572/620hp crate engine, all the better to proper this 3,990-pound F-body to a best quarter-mile of 11.18 at 124 mph. The ber-fat-block is fed by a Holly HP 1050 carb-Hooker Super Comp headers take out the junk. It's backed up by a manual-valve-body Turbo 350 from Transmission Specialties, a 3-inch moly driveshaft from Strange, and a Moser 12-bolt diff spinning 4.10:1 gears, while SSBC brakes scrub off the speed. Bob's friend Warren Piche clued us in to this kick-ass second-gen, which was awfully nice of him, don't you think?

Young Gun

Corey Gilchrist
Parkersburg, WV

Corey thought it would be cool to get a copy of CHP with his car in it as he works his way through National Guard boot camp, and we agree. Our Young Gun received his Malibu upon high school graduation in 2007 and has been hard at work ever since, making it through a frame-off resto, then powering his Mali with a 650-cfm-Holley-fed, 0.030-inch-over 327 backed by a built Turbo 350 transmission and a 4.56:1-geared 10-bolt differential. Corey says that he takes his car out every chance he gets and assures us that he gets plenty of admiring looks when he does.

Seeing Red
'67 Malibu SS
Rick Sward
Dallas, TX

Rick actually wrote to our PQA department with a tech question, but he also sent a nice shot of his car, so here it is. Rick's project Chevelle is powered by a '69-vintage, iron-headed 396 big-block that's been punched 0.060 inch over with Eagle pistons to 408 ci and a 8.5:1 compression ratio. A Performer intake draws through an Edelbrock 650-cfm carb on the intake side, and an HEI distributor with an ACCEL module lights the fires, while Summit Performance headers along with 2.5-inch tubes and Flowmaster mufflers handle the exhaust end. It also has a Turbo 350 with a B&M 2,400-stall converter, shift kit, and trans cooler.

Black & Blue
'68 Camaro RS
Gary Nau
Kenosha, WI

Gary got right to the point in telling us about his RS, starting with the 461ci big-block under the hood. It runs KB pistons at 10:1 compression, wears Edelbrock RPM Performer heads and intake, and has a Holley 850 mixer up top. Ignition consists of a Mallory distributor teamed with an MSD 6AL box, while the exhaust system consists of ceramic-coated Hooker Super Comp headers up front and Flowmaster mufflers out back. The drivetrain combo sports a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch, a Muncie four-speed trans, and a 3.73:1 12-bolt posi rear. The refurbished body was equipped with a 4-inch steel cowl hood and then reinforced with subframe connectors.

Big Stuff
'66 Impala SS
Dan Sanford
Norwalk, IA

Dan imported his B-body from Florida via eBay and says it was a "big mistake," though that's hard to see now. The droptop has a '67-era 396 in it with an Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap manifold, a 750-cfm Holley, and Hooker headers, though Dan has a stout 427 on the stand waiting to go in-which is appropriate, given that the car wears 427 fender badges. The new mill will team up with a Tremec five-speed trans running back to a posi-equipped, 3.73:1-geared rearend. The running gear has also been treated right, being outfitted with CPP 13-inch front brakes and 18-inch Foose Legend wheels.
