A classic style begins at inception. Perhaps no other musclecar reflects that more than the ’70 Chevelle SS. The concerto of the bulging hood, the unique rear bumper treatment, its distinct grille, and the muscular body panels for ’70 all reinforced the theme.

To propel such a car, Chevrolet offered its most powerful lineup of big-block engines. Standard equipment included a 350hp 396ci engine (402ci actual displacement), and as extra-cost options, buyers could choose among a 375hp 396ci and two powerful 454ci engines.

As an admirer of classic style, Daniel Albert seized the opportunity in the early ’90s to acquire this well-optioned ’70 SS convertible. Unique equipment included electric seatback lock releases, a windshield-washer monitor, and power windows. Although the Chevelle had led a pampered life, the car needed attention to detail to really shine. First on Dan’s list included contracting Danny Bell of Santa Barbara, California, to refinish the car in the original Cranberry Red hue.

Since the stock L34 396ci had a few years under its belt, Dan took the opportunity to add more power to the A-body. To do that, Dan contacted Greg Copper from Channel Island Marine to build a vintage-correct LS5 454ci big-block. To maintain the original engine appearance, Dan retained all the factory big-block components under the hood. Shifting duties for the A-body convertible are assigned to an original but reworked Turbo 400 automatic transmission. Since Dan and his wife Tina love to cruise the California coast in their convertible, Dan added a set of 3.08 gears to the original 12-bolt rearend. That’s doing it in style.
