Foreign Affairs
As I'm writing this, I'm flying back from a week-long vacation in an area where the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet (if you can name this place, send in your answers to the e-mail below and there's some CHP schwag for ya). Truth be told, this is the first time I've taken a real vacation-or a real break-in the eight years I've been here. Don't get me wrong, I take a couple days here and there, but I usually end up working from home and I'm pretty much on standby if something needs to be handled.
Could I afford it? Not really, but I also couldn't afford not to do it. The biggest push to get me out there was Associate Publisher Jonathan Ozeretny. A couple of quick jabs at me, tales of the potential fun to be had, and the promise of time to do nothing but relax and enjoy the scenery were all it took to lure me onboard with the plan. And a short three months later, I was en route to the getaway with him and his better half.
What did we do? Quite a bit. Most of our time was spent idle by the beach and pool, and we checked out the small downtown scene and ate some great food at hole-in-the-wall restaurants. And now it's back to the real world in less than 10 hours. Of course, I'm completely sunburned, even with the SPF 70 I had on my face. No worries; it'll be a great, yet slightly painful, reminder over the next week of the incredible time I had.
Still, I bet you're wondering if there's anything to get out of this month's editorial. Oh, you betcha! I got to ride on a wood trolley converted from The General's finest early-'90s 1/2-ton truck. The real kicker was seeing the newfangled dash that featured the original instrument cluster-and forget the automatic; this baby sported a stick. I'm willing to bet the entire frame and driveline was still intact and it was more or less topped off with a new outer shell.
The other Bow Tie that garnered my attention was a rather small compact dubbed the Chevrolet Tornado. The more I think about it, the Tornado looked very similar to an older Sprint, albeit fairly new. I only noticed two of them, each featuring a utility bed like a mini sport truck. They definitely didn't peg the cool meter, but nevertheless, they were neat to see in person. I should also mention the third-gen I saw; sadly, it had seen better days, with its withered paint and mangled front and rear valences. Still, cool to see one running. Oh, lest I forget, there were plenty of Astro vans there, all slapped with a taxi sign.
