I really don’t like to admit it, but I’m turning into that guy. You know, the one who likes to reminisce about the good ol’ days. Don’t worry I won’t bore you with the long-winded version—well, maybe.
I got my start back in 2000, landing a job as a staffer on our sister publication Car Craft magazine. Back then, we were constantly traveling and hitting up many of the National Muscle Car Association (NMCA) events all across the country.
At that time, most of our muscle car publications could be seen representing their colors, and it was a sight to behold. Seriously, once we hit the grounds, you would see any number of shooters and staffers scampering the scene to find their favorite cars, and eventually marking them for an upcoming feature. The only way it could have gotten better … if it was our own event.
This year, that’s changing and I’m really excited to announce the Chevy High Performance Nationals, which is scheduled for June 1-3, 2012, at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia. Working with ProMedia, the good folks who produce the NMCA events, we’ve put together an all-Chevy-branded event (open to all GM vehicles) that’s promised to be filled with exciting nonstop action, including 300-plus mph jet cars, several heads-up drag racing classes, a car show, an autocross course, along with a huge manufacturers’ midway, and wait for it … we’re even bringing our second annual Chevy High Performance Street Machine Challenge (SMC) to the scene! And for you NMCA LSX competitors, this event will be a part of the LSX Challenge Series.
If you’ve ever wanted to grace the pages of Chevy High Performance, then this will be an excellent opportunity to make it happen, namely because I’m planning to have our best photographers on scene. Our guys will be shooting throughout the weekend for event coverage and actively scouring the grounds for potential feature cars. It’ll be that easy!
As I noted earlier, we’re bringing our Street Machine Challenge to this venue. This means you’ll get to check out the suspension manufacturers’ rides getting pushed to the limits, however, we’re also going to give you an opportunity to compete against other readers in the Top Rides Shootout. It’ll follow the SMC format, requiring your rides to run down the dragstrip, navigate through the autocross, and participate in the 60-to-0 mph braking challenge; the biggest difference is you’re required to do all the driving.
We are limiting the number of people who can participate in the Top Ride Shootout, so I strongly urge you to send in your requests to me as soon as possible at firstname.lastname@example.org. As for rules, it’s really simple—all cars must be street legal and wearing 200 treadwear-rated rubber. If you’re good with that, then all you need to do is send in several images of your street machine (preferably profile shots, along with the interior and the engine bay) and be sure to scribe in the complete stats of your ride (engine, suspension, and transmission).
