The 360ci small-block sports 10.5:1 compression through the use of forged internals and domed pistons with a set of massaged cast-iron cylinder heads. Mike still has the original GM paperwork and grease pencil markings. To set his ride apart from the rest, he added a 383ci stroker motor and carbon fiber throughout the Nova. Does the hood look familiar? It's a custom designed L88-styled carbon-fiber piece. Mike continued the carbon-fiber theme into the interior, and shaved numerous pieces off the Nova for a sleeker look. The signal lights were donated from a '69 Camaro and mounted into a custom fiberglass front bumper. Naturally, his $69,000 plan was highly detailed and was always in sight. Here he gives us the cogent reasons for what he's accomplished and how he did it. "I wanted to build it rock-solid and with a bitchin' but not overly flashy or overstated appearance inside and out," he explains. "I wanted there to be some modern touches but no modifications that took away from the classic look of the '69. It had to be blue because I'm a surfer and a fisherman and the deep blue color of the ocean has been a constant part of my life. I used my computer and digital skills to visualize different paint schemes, graphics, and stripes for the car and determined that modifications to a solid blue base only looked different, but not better, so I stayed with a solid blue scheme.

Photo Gallery: 1969 Chevy Camaro - Chevy High Performance Magazine

Photo Gallery: 1969 Chevy Camaro - Chevy High Performance Magazine

It's like a film negative in the heart that the mind can print anytime. Personal history is infused with current situations. Things are often not what they appear. Pat McNeil's Chevelle is one such example. He built his $5,000 fixer-upper with a street-and-strip vibe, mostly race car but something that would function ably on Main Street. The fact is that his '69 Chevelle would do the straight cruise well but it would be far from agile on a road course. Pat couldn't care less. See, if it's a feature in a car-buff magazine, it has got to be the greatest. But there are legions of mavericks out there who do what they want just because it pleases them. Some stuff dies hard. The old Pro Street ethic is one, yet it lives strong and vibrant in the hearts of many and likely always will. Mike Saiki put the machinework and requisite balancing act on Team C in nearby Bellflower. Then he gathered up the stock steel crankshaft, connecting rods, and forged aluminum pistons (10:1) and put them in the cradle. He linked the Isky camshaft to the crank snout with an Edelbrock geardrive system. That way he'd have both ends of the power module geezing, whirring, and sounding way off color and bumptious. The valvetrain is composed entirely of Iskenderian components, from the 280 Mega camshaft (0.485 lift, 232 degrees duration at 0.050 inch, and a 108-degree centerline) and the hardware to the hardened pushrods and the 1.5:1 roller rockers. He took the path less traveled with the cylinder heads, though, reviving some vintage camel-hump castings with screw-in rocker studs, guide plates, 2.02 intake valves, and Isky springs. The ignition is Pertronix but it looks stock. To maintain the sleeper motor aura, Mike used an Edelbrock Performer matched with a Holley 750-cfm vacuum-secondary carburetor and connected it to the cowl-induction cold-air intake. The boom tubes begin with Hedman headers and end with a Flowmaster True Dual exhaust system as plumbed by Mike's Performance Exhaust in Los Angeles. A Centerforce Dual Friction 11-inch clutch assembly winds torque to the Rock Crusher transmission, thence to a Cook's Machine Works (Los Angeles) driveshaft to the 12-bolt holding 3.73s and a Tom's Differentials-modified Eaton differential.

Photo Gallery: 1969 Chevy Camaro SS - Chevy High Performance Magazine

Photo Gallery: 1969 Chevy Camaro SS - Chevy High Performance Magazine

Four seasons locked up in the upper northwest left Doug Lance with nowhere to go but up. He started his build by saving it from the crusher. It has extensive powdercoating to the frame and chassis underneath. His purpose-built 496-incher was planted with an Eagle rotating assembly and Oliver main caps. For cylinder heads, he hogged out a pair of GM rectangle ports and topped it off with a Dart single-plane manifold. A Chuck Nuytten 1050 dominator feeds fuel, and a 250 shot plate supplies N20 down its throat. We can't wait to see what another harsh Michigan winter produces, as he is already pondering the use of a Procharger.

Photo Gallery: 1966 & 1969 Chevy Chevelles - Chevy High Performance Magazine
