The project, which was created to financially assist families of fallen or disabled Veterans through the Armed Forces Foundation, will be featured at one of Washington's most widely attended and prestigious galas - the 2008 Armed Forces Foundation Congressional Gala. Hundreds of guests including Congressmen, Senators, members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and injured Service Members from Walter Reed Army Hospital and the National Naval Medical Center will get the chance to view it for the last time before it lands at its final destination, the 6th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car auction in Palm Beach, Florida March 27-30, 2008. The car will then be sold to the highest bidder with all proceeds going to the Armed Forces Foundation. Watch the auction live on the Speed Channel from 12:00 - 3:00 pm EST Friday, March 28.

"This is truly a magnificent piece of work where supporters of our military community came together for a good cause," said Armed Forces Foundation President, Patricia Driscoll. "The money raised will be used to assist families of the wounded with bills, travel, funeral expenses (if necessary) and any other hardships they are facing during these stressful times."

Project American Heroes began last summer when CARS Inc. of Rochester Hills, MI and the Roadster Shop of Elgin, IL, united with the editors of Super Chevy to recreate a classic 1957 Chevrolet convertible. Armed Forces personnel were then invited to select the ultimate design for this dream vehicle including the color scheme, interior design and exterior trim via the Project American Heroes Web site (www.projectamericanheroes.net). Super Chevy covered every step of the project, following the complete build-up across multiple issues of the magazine, culminating with a special 100-page commemorative Super Chevy issue, "Building the Ultimate '57."

"We are thrilled with the participation and enthusiasm over Project American Heroes," said Super Chevy magazine publisher, Ed Zinke. "We would like to offer a special thank you to our readers for their interest, our partners who contributed their time, skill and materials, and the military personnel who helped determine the final design. Everyone's contributions made this project a huge success." Super Chevy is published by Source Interlink Media, a division of Source Interlink Companies, Inc.

The AFF was established in 2001 as a 501 (c) 3 and is a part of the U.S. Department of Defenses' America Supports You program. That meant custom fab work with laborious sweat and creative forethought, including engine swaps that most would frown upon today. Yes, dropping a Bow Tie powerplant into B-o-Ps and even the Blue oval variances.

These days, while we're seeing an incredible number of Ls mills being transplanted into just about everything with four wheels, and then some- including street machines, drag cars, boats, and off-road sandrails, i've seen tremendous growth in big-blocks being dropped into '87-93 Fox-body Mustangs for doorslammer applications. Do i agree with this? Not really; however, i'm willing to give up some semblance of respect for the type of numbers these guys are laying down at the top end of the stripe.

More recently, i spoke with a major aftermarket supplier who asked me about my perspective. I said my piece and he replied, "it kills me to see any Chevy, let alone a big-block, in a Ford. While i can't stand those combinations, it seems to be getting more and more popular, and unfortunately, they seem to work well." The tone of his voice really revealed his mixed emotions over the matter, but all said and done, it's a fact of life; people are doing it and like anything, some love it, while others would like to use those creations as a boat anchor.

I'm sure many of you have read or heard about another magazine in our source interlink media family, where they stuffed an Ls1 into one of these cars. Of course, i couldn't resist scanning the net to see what people were saying about it, and sure enough, there was quite a buzz on several Ls-type message forums. As expected, many couldn't fathom the thought, while others wanted to learn more about it. If nothing else, it stirred up enough of a controversy that it made for a good read.

Now don't get me wrong, i have no intention of going that route-not even the desire-i just want to know what your thoughts are on the subject. Better yet, have you ever created something similar or has the thought even crossed your mind? What about sticking a sportbike engine into a golf cart? Yes, i've seen one, and boy did it do some incredible wheelies. If you have photos, i'd like to see them.

E-mail Me: chevyhi@sourceinterlink.com
Flame Me: chevyhiperformance.com

Photo Gallery: Shop Talk - Chevy High Performance

'07's "Saturday Night Special" bigblock? I'm building a motor just like it!
Richard Donahue
Via e-mail

You got us; we definitely floundered on this one by leaving out the part number (Comp Cams 11-852-9). Oddly, it figures it would happen on a combination that's been getting quite a bit of attention.

Back Issues
I would like to purchase some back issues. Is it possible for me to receive these?
Dan Underwood Jr.
Shelton, WA

Lately, we're getting a lot of inquires regarding back issues, so we'll put this question out there for everyone. your best bet is to try primediabackissues.com; however, if they don't offer it, e-mail us again and we'll do our best to get a copy of the article to you.

Carbs & Altitude
Great mag. I've been reading it for years. I live in Colorado, where altitude plays a lot in attitude. What about an engine build specifically for our area? Living at 6k feet makes it a challenge to build motors and a chore to tune. I'd love to see dos and don'ts about carburetors and cams.
Ron Sims
Peyton, CO

I remember kevin discussing this topic in Performance Q&A a while back, but it's certainly worth revisiting.

Rated Pg-13
I'm thinking of purchasing this magazine for my 13-year-old son, but I would like to know if there are any inappropriate pictures here that I would not approve of him having, such as half-dressed women. I would appreciate your comments.
Rachael
Taneyville, MO

Rest assured that we don't showcase "half-dressed women" here. will say that we did have a model in a car feature in the July '06 issue, but it was so tame that I don't even think anyone noticed her.

S-10 Coverage
I've been a subscriber for several years and really enjoy reading CHP. A lot of the info has helped me quite a bit, but I know I can't be the only person to ask for articles on small-block motors with automatics being installed into 2Wd S-10 pickups.
Stanley Wilcher
Mt. Washington, ky

Funny you should bring this up.was recently checking up on a 434ci-packing S-10 that could really lay down the numbers at the dragstrip. While people have been doing this for a while, it's something we need to follow up with. If any of you S-10 owners are reading this, send us pictures of what you have, and don't forget to give up the details.

LT1 Hunting
recently saw your tips on LT1s in the Jan. '08 issue. And while I liked the tips you offered for both the seasoned and new owners, you forgot to mention that the rearend gears in an automatic came with a choice of 2.73s or 3.23s and that the six-speeds were the only ones to get 3.42s.The codes were Gu2 (2.73s) and Gu5 (with 3.23s), and I believe the code for the 3.42s was Gu8 and they can be found either in the door or in the glovebox. Also, for those who don't mind losing maybe 1-2 mpg, a good torque converter will drop as much as 0.6 second off their quarter-mile times.

I have a '97 Trans Am WS6, and with only bolt-ons (stock heads, cam, and bottom end) and minor suspension work, I run 12.98 at 103.03 with a 1.71 60-foot. keep up the LT1 edit, as I like some of the info you guys put in there. James Fuller diamond, MO

Thanks for the additional info, and yep, we'll be introducing more pieces on LT1s for sure.

Over- Heard
What would be a good starter for a noobie?
-Mpayne, Chevyhiperformance.com

Anyone seen a '68-70 4-cylinder Nova? I don't know why I'm so obsessed with this, but I can't even find a picture of one in a car.
-Ryannicea05, novas.net

Is there anywhere in the Internet that would have a listing of GM parts and their numbers, like bolts, brackets, door switches, and a few dozen others, or am I just dreaming?
-Flameout, chevelles.com

I love Pro Touring- style cars. But I've been thinking about making some changes to the Nova to make it a straight-line performer.
-Steemin, lateral-g.net

Over Steer
This month's dyno thrash article got me thinking that someone could create a whole new magazine devoted solely to the art, science, and sometimes sheer agony of installing aftermarket performance parts. Combat Mechanics, maybe, or Guerilla Installation Tactics Monthly are just a couple of possible titles that jump out at me, though the latter almost certainly has too many words in it-magazine titles need to be crisp, getting straight to the point.

Before you get the wrong idea, I'm not in any way suggesting that any of the parts in the above-mentioned article is lacking in quality. The truth is quite the opposite, actually. In my experience, the quality of performance parts is better than ever, designs are constantly being improved upon, and the number of applications increases almost daily. As far as the parts themselves, it's never been easier to bolt on more horsepower.

On the other hand, that doesn't mean it's always easy to bolt that horsepower on. It probably sounds like I'm contradicting myself-not an entirely unusual occurrence-but I'm actually trying to differentiate between the parts themselves and the act of installing said parts. Ever order the wrong part, and not find out that it's wrong until you're attempting to bolt the thing up- or worse yet, discover it doesn't work after you've already got it bolted on? No? Ok, I'm the only one... Go figure.

It's also one thing to bolt parts onto a bare-bones engine that's devoid of trimmings, emissions, and other factoryinstalled niceties...and quite another to add a piece to the mix and keep all the extras functioning as well. We're mostly thinking of vacuum lines here. According to the dictionary, vacuum is "a space from which all air or gas has been extracted." Synonyms include "emptiness" and "nothingness." All I can say is that we spent a helluva lot of time making sure the multiple lines carrying this something defined as nothing were properly hooked up, and my Auto Zone Rewards points balance has increased notably.

The devil's in the details, the saying goes, and this is often the case with bolt-ons. Sometimes the struggle to get everything properly plugged in seems like a war, but when the spoils are more horsepower, then we, like you, keep coming back for more.

Rooster Call
Has it been that long already? Six months seem to have flown by in the blink of an eye-it feels like last week I got hired here at CHP. A lot has happened in these short months, and I have a ton of respect for the team involved in making this magazine function month after month.

I hit this job running and received its crash course without a helmet. I've already got one testdrive event, SEMA, and PRI under my belt. And with the project El Camino, I've got my hands full. Along the way, I have skinned my knee a couple of times and stubbed my toe more times than I can count. I fully admit to being a rookie, the FNG if you will, still wet behind the ears. I'm fresh meat on deck and definetly no hot shot. I've got a lot to learn.

Heck, I wanted to work for a racemachine shop, join a race team, and tour the country; I never expected to be here. If it weren't for the guidance, help, and patience of this staff... well, I'm not going to get all soft on you, but let's just say never have I experienced a work environment where teamwork was a staple and practically a job requirement. A lending hand is literally only an office door away. I sincerely appreciate every bit of criticism and opinion in everything I try and accomplish here, even if it's about what color my shoes are. I accept commentary in every form because every sliver helps. And I rely on it later, ultimately producing higherquality stories and generating a better magazine for you.

You may not realize it-I certainly didn't-but I can confidently call these people friends as well as colleagues. It's rare to find an open-door policy, where you can actually sit with the "big guy" and throw around ideas for various projects. Quite frankly, to do it with such freedom is an awesome experience not shared by many. And if it weren't for them catching me every time I fell, this magazine wouldn't be what it is. They have an unbelievable amount of patience and have been providing me with guidance, which helps keep me on track. I can be certain this ain't a one-man show-it takes teamwork and the compilation of effort from many. Cheers!

YOUNG GUNS
San Ramon, California's RJ Barranti is only 16 and he's already got a jump on the high-performance side of things. RJ's '79 Chevy Cheyenne (aka Black Sunshine) is a perfect foundation for adding go-fast goodies. Currently his 350ci small-block is bone stock, as is the factory Midnight Black paint. His plans include an Edelbrock intake and carburetor to aid the Flowmaster exhaust he's already installed. He loves driving his Big 10 Cheyenne to school and says it's a blast.

GM Drops Its Top
GM was in full force during the '07 L.A. Auto Show and made sure to showcase its full line, from compacts to musclecars and trucks. With the '09 Camaro right around the corner, and to help quench the thirst of all Camaro lovers, Chevy teased the crowd with a ragtop. That's right; if you weren't already aware of it, The General will be offering a convertible as well. --SH

More Cars for Jay
Another catch at the L.A. Auto Show was a special-edition Corvette built for Jay Leno. Dubbed C6RS, it runs on E85 and puts out an easy 600 hp and 585 lb-ft, thanks to a 500ci LS mill from Katech Engine Building & Development. --SH

Dashing
Who among us hasn't dreamed about sitting behind the wheel of a '67 Corvette, especially a 435hp Tri-Power big-block car? The real thing is out of reach for most of us mere mortals, but with GMP's new 1:6 dashboard replica, anyone can get the feel of that legendary cockpit. The detail in this piece is beyond meticulous: Every switch and lever works, including the radio dials; the steering wheel turns; the glovebox and ashtray open; it comes with a real set of ignition keys; and it even has an owner's manual. Load it up with three AAA batteries and the dash lights come to life. And if you need your mini-dash to be useful as well as cool, it also comes with a business card holder. Check it out in either black or red by calling 800.536.1637 or visiting gmpdiecast.com. --JN

Prestone Turns 80
We may take antifreeze for grant-ed these days, but when Prestone hit the market in 1927, there were 20 million cars on the road (as opposed to today's 217 million), and the ability to keep a car's cooling system from freezing in cold weather wasn't a sure thing. Back then, Prestone consisted of pure ethylene glycol in cans, with published charts showing the protection afforded by specific quantities. The concoction wouldn't boil away or burn and was relatively odorless, unlike some of the other antifreezing agents of the day: honey, sugar, molasses, and methyl alcohol. The formula has changed over the last 80 years, but Prestone is still producing a variety of antifreeze/coolants, as well a wide range of cooling system flush and cleaner products. For more information on the brand's 80th anniversary and Prestone products, visit prestone.com.

Baby Buckets
Known as one of the leaders in high-performance and racing seat technology, Recaro also has you covered when you're doing kid transportation duty with its five new child safety seats, which the company says incorporate years of proven engineering and design to protect your children. The latest seats include the Como and Signo (shown), designed for children up to 8 years old weighing 5-70 pounds. Both feature Side Impact Protection, adjustable headrests, innovative latch-bar systems, a racing-inspired five-point harness system, and a comfortable ergonomic shape for an improved upright position for your youngster. Seats for children up to 12 years old and a new line for infants are also available. Visit recaro.com for more info. Unless you're independently wealthy, you better have teammates to share the expenses. That doesn't mean having one or two people to pony up for the bills every single time; instead, we all do our part for the cause. That includes friends who are nice enough to join us and get greasy in exchange for a healthy diet of water and ham-and-cheese sandwiches--sometimes we go crazy and splurge for chips.

Having teammates means you're lucky enough to have a crew you can count on for parts gallops and help with last-minute thrashes; never mind the fact that these required duties to make an event usually come up at late hours of the night--after we get home from our real jobs. Yep, your teammates become a part of your family. (Incidentally, it's never a bad thing to be good friends with your machine shop.)

Let's not forget the added help at the track. When you're going rounds and have to get the car ready heading into the finals, there's quite a bit of work to be done: charging the batteries, weighing and swapping out the bottles with the bottle heaters, and making tuning changes through the laptop, progressive controller, and digi-set timers. We're not done yet; we still have to add fuel, double-check the tire pressures, flow the fuel system, repack the chute, and check the plugs... And it all has to happen in as little as 20 minutes during the final rounds. And for that, I have to give credit where credit is due: Artis Houston, the Saikis (Mike, Gordon, and Ryan), Steve Johnson, Damon Rivetti, and Dario Yancy.

So what did we accomplish? Quite a bit, actually. Far from slapping together a combination and running the numbers, as some of you already know, it was a struggle from the start, but we closed the season with an incredible ending. Not to make this long-winded, I'll say that during the PSCA finals on the weekend of November 17, 2007, at California Speedway in Fontana, we qualified in the middle of the field in the sixth spot for Sunday's eliminations. We had a bye run in the first round, then beat out the number-one qualifier with a 7.93 to a losing 8.0, followed by a 7.94 win in the semis and a win in the final round with a 7.90-at-176-mph pass! The real kicker--we even took home the low e.t. record for the class.

We've since pulled the motor and are in the process of freshening it up for next season. What most don't know is that we're already updating our combination--except that secret will be out in the months to come. Until then--unlike the past--we'll be ready for the first race of the year. While I have your attention, if you have anything you'd like to see with our combo, shoot me an e-mail at the addy below. Chosen at SEMA as one of the best new Street-Performance products (runner-up), the kits make it possible to adapt a Gear Vendors unit for use on the ever popular T-10 trans. The Gear Vendors UNDER/OVERDRIVE is a 2-speed planetary gearbox that bolts to the vehicle's existing transmission allowing the driver a direct drive (1:1) or overdrive (1:1.286) option in any gear, at any moment. With manual transmission applications such as the T-10, not only does the Gear Vendors add a fifth gear of overdrive to your classic muscle car transmission, its gear splitting capabilities enables you to make full throttle, clutchless shifts into overdrive. This CNC machined billet aluminum tensioner is a direct bolt-on replacement for the original equipment spring loaded tensioner and can be torqued to the exact belt tension required. Best of all, it controls damper resonance often encountered in high rpm applications or when aftermarket balancers are utilized. By controlling resonance, belt slippage - a common problem in high performance LS1 engines - is eliminated.

In addition to the performance benefits, the COMP Cams® Billet LS1 Belt Tensioner also features a black anodized finish, with a laser etched COMP Cams® logo, for great looks and protection from engine compartment elements. During a private press conference at the North American International Auto Show, GM invited the media and nearly 250 enthusiasts from various Camaro clubs and Web sites across the country to take part in the unveiling.

Building up the excitement, GM brought out an incredible marching band, one-on-one interviews were broadcasted live over the Internet, and several immaculate first-gen Camaros proudly cruised through Cobo Hall in a parade-like manner.

When it came time to showcase the new '06 concept Camaro, it was obvious this was a no-holds-barred creation to bring back the pony car wars. With the retro look coming on stronger than ever, the '06 concept drove under its own power and showed distinct characteristics resembling a '69 Camaro with its wide body, similar roofline, and highly recognizable nose.

Inside, the interior was simple, hosting only the necessities in an aesthetically pleasing package. Once again, it retained the '69 theme, all the while providing ample room for the driver and a passenger and plenty of space in the back for two adults.

The drivetrain absolutely screams modern, and we're pleased to say the General didn't cut any corners here. Underneath the hood is a 6.0L 400hp LS2 mated to a six-speed T56 transmission. And unlike all the live-axle predecessors, this one featured an independent rear suspension with progressive-rate coil springs and gas-pressurized dampers.

Continuing the modern flare is a monstrous set of 22-inch wheels out back with 305/30R22 tires, while the front utilized 21-inch rollers with 275/30R21 rubber. And if you think the wheels are impressive, GM went a step further by adding 14-inch rotors on all four corners with four-piston calipers.

As of now, word has it we can expect the all-new Camaro between '08 and '09, with a street price starting at $25,000 for base models, which will make it competitively priced with its arch rival. Will the Camaro include all the amenities shown here? Will it look the same? Given the nature of a concept car, we're sure it'll be refined after taking in additional input from various sources. However, considering the positive responses GM's already received, refinement only means it'll get better. Now cross your fingers and let's hope GM brings back our beloved musclecar!

Photo Gallery: 2006 Camaro Concept Car

There's nothing we can say about the devastation and tragedy that hasn't been said a million times already. To help the victims as best we can, Year One has started the Hot Rodders' Relief Fund to collect donations for the Red Cross relief efforts. Every penny collected will go to the Red Cross.

Year One is in a unique position to quickly and effectively act as a collection center for donations. We have the business mechanisms in place to accept funds from customers via credit card, check, cash and electronically through our phone operators and our website. We have generated a specific part number in our system to track and account for every penny donated to the relief effort, and our system generates and mails a receipt to you for your donation.

All funds collected by Year One and our partners will be given to the Red Cross-there will be nothing "held back" for any sort of administration fees or anything else. Everything collected for the Red Cross will go to the Red Cross, to be used as they see fit. If you would like to help us in our effort, please visit <A HREF="http://www.yearone.com"TARGET="_new">www.yearone.com and click the Hot Rodders Hurrican Relief Fund logo or contact Marci Stevens at (706) 658-2140, Ext. 112, and we can determine the steps required to work with your organization.

Photo Gallery: Year One Hot Rodders Hurricane Relief Fund

This is the ultimate appearance maintenance product for show cars. Contaminants like tree sap mist, industrial fall out and hard water spots substantially degrade the reflective qualities of automotive paint finishes. If not removed quickly, contaminants will bond and eventually chemically etch the surface. NXT Generation Speed Detailer, safe for all paint surfaces, quickly removes fresh contaminants and restores that "just waxed" show car appearance.

NXT Generation Speed Detailer, conveniently packaged in a 24-ounce spray bottle, is the quick and easy way to prolong shine on all types of vehicles. Meguiar's, the century-old leader in automotive appearance care, offers serious car care for car crazy people around the world. Its next generation of technology redefines quality and performance. Chosen by the "Best of Show" and 21 out of 24 "Best of Class" winners at the 2004 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Meguiar's provides highly specialized products for every conceivable automotive surface, including paint, wheels, tires and interiors. As part of its passionate support for the collector car hobby, Meguiar's created "Car Crazy Television," seen weekly on the SPEED Channel and "Car Crazy Radio," which airs weekly in over 120 markets nationally.

Photo Gallery: Meguiars NXT Generation Speed Detailer Makes Detailing Easy
