I torn apart the engine, and IMHO I found something unusual. The side aligment of rocker arms have a huge side allowance. The rocker arms are moving from side to side, even using just using just pushrods, although they were adjusted. One side of the engine is better then other. I feel the new rocker arm kit is a solution, but what could cause this behavior and what allows it? Sometimes using the proper gasket works better than anything. Silicone is good for some things but if you don't get proper coverage or over tighten the bolts you can get gaps and leaks. It has a 350 small block in it that I plan on turning into a 383 stroker, aluminum heads, edelbrock carb, whole nine yards. I'm already getting pretty close to two thirds of my budget, and cost is definitely a factor, but not huge. I'm wanting speed out of this truck more than towing power (I've got a '03 Z71 for that). It has the stock three speed manual in it (I'm not sure if there was more than one), and I'm not sure that will be able to handle power like I want it to. So any suggestions? She quit running about 5 miles from my house after limping up the interstate for an hour(only way home). Supposedly just had the original quadrajet rebuilt but she runs rich as hell and purdy rough, with a few dying rolls to a stop. Seen as how this old thing will be parked in the parking lot for a bit with free time, what kind of cam, manifold, valve train, and carb combo is going to give me the best power and less backfire for my buck? (See my thread on here from a month or two ago) It was so much easier than haunting the wrecking yards and fiddling around with getting a CPU reprogrammed. Everything I needed was in the kit including the fuel system, didn't need to run to the parts store a hundred times. The price tag scared me off for a couple of years and I did lots of research. Starter did not align so Transmission was dropped and Fly Wheel Replaced; starter did not align properly so the Mechanics held the Starter in place to start vehicle and told me to get to a place where I was going to park. Starter was Replaced w/ Rebuilt Starter and GM Bolts and still would not align w/ the Flywheel. # 1 Idiot Mechanic fashioned a Makeshift Brace to hold the Starter in Place; now the Starter is Sparking and will not start the vehicle. I (Customer) am now crawling under the vehicle for a closer inspection. I am installing a New Starter and I am assuming that the Starter Mount on the Engine Block and the Flywheel is damaged. I (customer) am requesting Mitchells online Digital Download from Public Library for above Mentioned Vehicle. I need more information on Repairing Stripped Bolts, Cracked Engine Block Mount and flywheel alignment ? Heli-Coil or Weld ? Personally I would go with a roller cam as in my cases they were always better than a flat tappet. As for a grind some of the others on this site are better qualified to answer than I since I have run only BBs since the 90s. As far as switching to a carb I believe that is straight forward. Just get a good intake, carb and fuel pump and you are in business. I have Mickey Thompson 33 x 21.50 x 15 for the rear, what size do you all think I should put on the front? I'm not going to race it, so I don't want the skinny front runners. I just bought 15 x 6" Weld draglites wheels for the front to match the rear wheels. I was thinking of going with 215-70-15. They are approx. 26.9" high. I want to keep a rake to the stance of the truck, not lowered down all around. It is carbureted with an Edelbrock 1406. I had it running(a little rough, slow response)for a few miles but after giving it some power, (one big punch)it died and now won't hold idle. Yesterday I could crank the engine while giving a little gas and it would start, but soon die even if I continued giving it gas. Now it won't start at all. I'm learning about carburetor adjustments. Would appreciate any suggestions. I'm going to check the fuel filter, but I think it's new. Thanks in advance. :) Also, I don't seem be able to visually detect any fuel in carburetor when engaging throttle. All else being equal, taller tire equals more speed and same rpm. Used parts can be a good source but you have to be careful there as some used parts can be a bad idea, used camshafts, except rollers, are a bad idea as they usually need to be kept together with the same lifters that they ran in the exact same location. 350/400hp is surely possible but with a low budget the only way I see that is with a small juice shot. Forged pistons are highly desirable when running juice. Installed the box (basically a Saginaw 800)with new steering coupler and find that the steering box/coupler is 1/4 inch longer than stock which doesn't match up to the steering shaft. I loosened the steering column hoping to have some wiggle room but it still seems too tight. Anyone run into this? :confused: I've looked at other couplers to see if there is a narrower version but no luck to date. I'm hoping someone has run into this. 67 SS tribute.
