| THE HIGHS |
Our suspension and tire pressure changes netted us a faster time. The seats and steering wheel made all the difference in the world. |
| THE LOWS |
The Nova's open differential is slowing the car down. The absence of a limited-slip differential isn't allowing the Nova to carry speed through the turns; instead it's spinning the inside tire. |
| THE VERDICT |
We started to take advantage of the adjustable shocks and coilovers. Kept an eye on tire wear and made notes of any suspension changes. We also need to get a limited-slip differential. |
Goodguys Costa Mesa
The Costa Mesa Goodguys event was the fourth autocross competition for the year. Although this time, using some of the knowledge we learned from the Del Mar event, we kept our eye on tire pressure. We decided after much deliberation to leave the suspension settings as they were from our previous outing. Quite frankly, the car worked well and we didn't want to change any of the settings.
| THE HIGHS |
A fresh rattle-can spray bomb finally made the Nova look more presentable. Leaving the suspension settings alone, the car drove just as well as it did in Del Mar. Seats and steering wheel. |
| THE LOWS |
Again, our open differential was frying the inside rear tire during cornering. |
| THE VERDICT |
The open rearend hamperns quick-cornering and causes the front to push. We've since ordered up a 9-inch rearend with 3.73:1 gears and a limited slip. |
Pedals
If there's one thing we learned, it's that constantly pounding on a plastic gas pedal with a small return spring isn't going to last long, especially if it's well over 30 years old. We finally wised up and replaced the factory pedals with a stronger set from Lokar. They look the part and are nearly indestructible under our feet.

Tie-Downs
Towing a vehicle to an event isn't mandatory but isn't a terrible idea if you have access to a truck and trailer. It's not to say something will go wrong, it's just nice to know you'll have a way to get the car home just in case something goes wrong. We'll admit it, our Nova gets hauled everywhere and sourcing a set of high-quality straps to safely secure the car to the trailer is cheap insurance. Mac's Custom Tie Downs create some of the best car-hauling straps around. We searched the site and found an all-in-one strap kit that included four heavy-duty ratchet straps and four axlehousing wraps. All the ratchet ends have spring loaded clips and even come with a sweet duffel bag for storage.
