Rubio tucked himself under... Rubio tucked himself under the hood and dropped in the new HEI unit. It took some patience and finesse turning the rotor, but eventually the distributor shaft gears meshed with the cam gear inside the block. It fell right in at the same location as the old unit. Once the distributor had positive... Once the distributor had positive engagement and sat flush against the manifold, we began to close up all the loose ends. Rubio landed the cap atop the rotor and used the Phillips screwdriver to secure it. DUI Live Wires (PN C9053, $100) come with easy-to-read cylinder numbers on each end, which made finding their places a cinch. Live Wires are also heat-resistant and have a durable, long-lasting silicone jacket and insulation. Spiral-wound cores prevent electronic interference. Following the standard big-block firing order (1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2), we plugged in the wires to the top of the rotor and then to the spark plugs. We left the clamp on the distributor... We left the clamp on the distributor just snug, but tight enough so it wouldn't jump around. From there, we followed through and hooked up all the necessary vacuum lines, throttle cable, and power to the ignition. However, we did leave the vacuum line to the vacuum advance diaphragm disconnected until we timed the engine. Rubio installed the air cleaner,... Rubio installed the air cleaner, stabbed the throttle for fuel, and turned the key. At first it didn't start, so we advanced the distributor a bit by turning it toward the carburetor. Once she fired up, Rubio went ahead and readjusted the idle. From there we ran the timing gun and advanced the timing to 36 degrees, where it ran smooth. After an impressive testdrive he said he could add another 100 feet to his burnouts. The old (right) and new (left)... The old (right) and new (left) distributors are almost identical. What sets them apart is Davis' knack for creating custom-calibrated units for your particular application. Even light throttle ping is eliminated by using DUI's special vacuum advances, making the units virtually maintenance-free. We got our cap in black, but they also come in blue, red, yellow, and clear. Ours also came with solid brass terminals and the DUI coil and Dyna-Module. The module provides more "electric dwell," which allows the coil to produce a more intense spark.
