Ideal rod length, or rod ratio, is a highly debated topic amongst gearheads and engine builders. For years, it was believed that the longest rod possible was best for making horsepower, but today many feel it depends on what you’re building. The longer rod makes the piston dwell at the top of the compression stroke longer, which is believed to build more cylinder pressure and promote a happier-revving engine due to increased piston speed, but again, camshaft profile, piston design, and how aggressive your valvetrain is are all pertinent factors. Another thing to consider is that a longer rod will also be heavier, so some feel what you gain from a lengthy rod, you give up by having a heftier rotating assembly.
