I'm an Old School hotrodder. I've had my fun with small blocks and Big Rat motors. I want to know how much work is involved, not just installing a Modern LS engine, But the wiring to make the CPU work properly. Plus, what about the under dash components, ie.. RPM, speedo, temperature etc... Will I have to rewire everything? What about the plumbing for the fuel. I don't think I'd be able to use my original gas tank and piping. No one seems to cover these things and I'm not that savey on doing my own electrical work. When will you have an article on this? I'm willing to lend you my '67 SS Camaro.

SScamaro327,
I am currently in the process of 5.3 swapping an 86 Monte Carlo, so I will try to answer your questions the best I can from what I have learned thus far.

Installing the engine itself is pretty simple, I used transdapt motor mounts and with some wiggling it dropped in place. Wiring is simple with an engine harness from which ever vehicle you pulled the motor from.

The CPU should function normally with a stock engine and transmission, otherwise it will need a tune.

You may need an adapter and additional speed sensor for your transmission. Depending on what motor/trans setup you go with you may also need a different flywheel and/ or torque converter. For example,

For gauges, you can either switch to a custom setup, purchase dakota digital or similar, or attmept to rewire your stock gauges.

You should be able to use your original fuel setup if you choose, but I would reccomend adding a sump to your stock tank and running an inline walboro 255 pump or similar.
