1968 Camaro Auto Body Repair - Structure & Color
Temperature and humidity are... Temperature and humidity are critical to how a given paint dries; it pays to know this information and paint in the right conditions. Again, the paint maker's tech info is vital here, as the optimum conditions will be spelled out. PPG's tech sheets, for instance, spell out what type of reducer you'll need for a given temperature. | According to Tom Prewitt,... According to Tom Prewitt, the biggest source of contamination when it comes to painting is the painter, thus he recommends always wearing a spray suit. This also protects the painter form harmful fumes. The metal panels Prewitt is spraying go for around $10 apiece at Coast Airbrush-handy for practicing painting technique. Trying to decide on a color? This is also a good way to see what a given hue will look like, and they can be sanded down and reused. Paint shops can also do a spray-out on one of these panels-costs vary-to help you make up your mind. | Guns are available for as... Guns are available for as little as $10, believe it or not, but you get what you pay for. Even if you're only planning to do one paint job in your life, the gun isn't an area you want to cheap out on. This Devilbiss three-gun set is available from Eastwood for $170. You get a gun for primer coats, one for topcoats, and one for detail work-and it comes with a cleaning kit too. | Spray pattern adjustment is... Spray pattern adjustment is critical to laying down a good layer of paint, and again, the manufacturer's tech sheet will spell out the proper size spray gun tip, the size of the spray gun pattern, the gun distance from the surface being sprayed, and the amount of overlap needed on each pass with the gun. On most paint guns, the upper knob controls the air pressure, while the lower knob controls paint delivery. Prewitt uses a piece of masking paper to set up his spray pattern before turning the gun toward metal. | There are a multitude of choices... There are a multitude of choices when it comes to paint guns, and Devilbiss, Iwata, and Sata are just a few of the manufacturers known for quality paint guns. Most guns these days are gravity fed and of the HVLP (high volume, low pressure) variety-this technology was introduced to improve transfer efficiency to meet environmental standards. In short, it means more of the material sprayed actually gets on the car. | Once the spray pattern is... Once the spray pattern is set, the spray gun should always be held at a 90-degree angle when painting. How far away it should be depends on the manufacturer; PPG generally recommends 6-9 inches for spraying distance, with a 50 percent overlap. Here's a tip from Robert Becker of Studio Auto Body: Be sure to spray across body gaps. If you stop at the borders, you'll build up excess paint at the edges. Other than that, all you have to do is lay down an even, consistent coat of paint that's ready for clear-or color sanding, if you're working with single-stage paint. |
