Once the spray pattern is set, the spray gun should always be held at a 90-degree angle when painting. How far away it should be depends on the manufacturer; PPG generally recommends 6-9 inches for spraying distance, with a 50 percent overlap. Here's a tip from Robert Becker of Studio Auto Body: Be sure to spray across body gaps. If you stop at the borders, you'll build up excess paint at the edges.
