Once the spray pattern is set, the spray gun should always be held at a 90-degree angle when painting. How far away it should be depends on the manufacturer; PPG generally recommends 6-9 inches for spraying distance, with a 50 percent overlap. Here's a tip from Robert Becker of Studio Auto Body: Be sure to spray across body gaps. If you stop at the borders, you'll build up excess paint at the edges. Other than that, all you have to do is lay down an even, consistent coat of paint that's ready for clear-or color sanding, if you're working with single-stage paint. View Related Article
