Building The Proper Fuel System For Carbureted Applications

* Naturally aspirated engines are generally most efficient with a BSFC between .45 and .55 lbs/hp/hr.
* Nitrous combinations typically use a little extra fuel and often develop a BSFC from .5 to .6 lbs/hp/hr.
* Forced induction engines are often least efficient, and BSFC ranges from .6 to .75 lbs/hp/hr.

(HP x BSFC = pounds of gasoline)
500 hp x .5 BSFC = 250 pounds of gasoline.
500 hp x .75 BSFC = 375 pounds of gasoline.

Here's an example of a complete fuel system from Aeromotive. Fitted to this '55 Chevy tank is a sump, and positioned on top of the tank are a relay kit, 10-gauge wire, an electric pump, several fittings, a regulator, and filters.

Aeromotive's proprietary sump is designed with two outlet fittings on the bottom with a return fitting, which can be see on the upper right. Inside the fuel sump you see the positioning of the internal baffling that captures the fuel from the return port. The sump is welded in the bottom of the tank at the rear center area. Only experienced welders familiar with working on fuel tanks should install fuel tank baffles, especially in used tanks.

A filter's micron rating is based on the smallest particle it will trap. For example, a 100-micron rating means that particles measuring 100 microns or larger will be trapped by the filter, while particles 99-micron and smaller will pass through the filter...

...A 100-micron filter is considered a coarse filter. The top filter is a 10-micron fine filter suitable to be installed between the pump and the carburetor on the pressure side. The bottom filter is a 100-micron coarse filter suitable to be installed between the tank and the fuel pump on the suction side.

This system may look sporty, but it's installed improperly. For starters, the generic auto parts store fuel filter is placed on the suction side of the pump. Secondly, the pump is installed above the tank. Lastly, the ground wire is only secured to the painted sheetmetal adjacent to the pump. Unfortunately, this owner more than likely assumes this setup is fine, solely based on the fact that the car starts and runs. To fix this, the fuel filter should be placed ahead of the pump along with a coarse filter before the pump and placed as low as possible. Also, a ground circuit traveling to the engine block should be used in conjunction with an improved body ground.
