Chevrolet records report that just over 200 Camaros were equipped with the JL8 brake package (out of about 240,000 total production units). Most '69 Camaros with brake options wore the power front-disc (11-inch front rotors)/ rear-drum arrangement (coded J50/J52), which cost just $61 extra on most models (replacing four-wheel drums).

The front splash shields and caliper mounting brackets supplied by Rick's First Gen match the original JL8 items. The front backing plates even include the factory part-number stamping.

The brackets and lines shown here include the frame hose brackets (left), the caliper mounting hose brackets (center), and the parking brake cable brackets (right). The metal lines are made by The Right Stuff and are factory replicas to route the brake fluid from the caliper fittings to the brake hoses.

This shot of the caliper shows the unique parts the front JL8 system uses to route the brake fluid to the caliper: a special metal line, the fitting, a bracket, and a hose. The fittings are specifically designed to work with these parts and are not typically found in auto parts stores.

The upright bracket required...

The upright bracket required to route the JL8 brake lines is the same part used on four-wheel-drum Novas and Camaros of the era. We sourced this one from a '70 Nova in a local wrecking yard.

With the new JL8-style frame brackets installed, we secured the brake hoses and lines.

The front installation is complete. The front brake rotors can be sourced from a '69 Corvette, and the hub is the same part found on the front of a '69 Camaro or '68-74 Nova with front drum brakes and uses the same bearing part numbers. The hub must be retrofitted with longer '69 Corvette wheel studs. The backing plates had to be moved slightly inward (tapped with a rubber mallet while the rotors are off) to clear the rotation of the brake rotors.
