Tech TipAre you getting ready to do a frame-off restoration to your vintage Chevy? Well, before you get your car down as far as this '69 Chevelle, you may want to make certain that the frame as well as the body shell are squared and in alignment. To do this the car will need to go to a frame shop with the frame and all sheetmetal (including doors and fenders) still assembled to the car so that it can be properly measured on a frame rack.
The benefits of doing this prior to any extensive work or body-panel replacement are numerous. First, if the car suffered from a previous accident that was not repaired properly it can be discovered. Second, the car's body and frame can generally be pulled back into proper position (if needed) without worry of body damage. And third, with the frame and body brought back to proper position body panels will typically fit as designed.-BM

It's MagicIf you lived in the San Fernando Valley back in the day, you'll undoubtedly recognize the purple and white paint scheme that graces this two-door '56 Chevy wagon. This wagon was one of a fleet of about 40 that the Los Angeles chain Magic Muffler used as parts chasers and loaner vehicles until the late '70s. Our friend Don Cook recently found this one at the April 2006 Pomona swap meet and quickly struck a deal with the seller.
Just this year the last Magic Muffler store in Thousand Oaks, California, closed its doors after 50 years of Southern California service. We're currently working to bring you more of the Magic Muffler history and its cool '56 Chevy wagons at later date.-BM
For SpeedBob MehlhoffA longtime friend of mine, Ted Granger, decided in the late '90s to start a carburetor restoration shop in Lancaster, California, because he loved hot rodding, talking with gearheads, and most importantly repairing and restoring these mechan-ical fuel-mixing devices. Many of his carburetor shop customers he recog-nized from 25 years earlier when he operated his own speed shop in Palmdale, California, called Ted's Speed Center. In the mid-'70s I'd drive up from the San Fernando Valley in my '69 Z/28 and often find his straight-axle Chevelle with tunnel ram and two Holleys parked in front of the shop.
Today he's still doing his hot-rodding thing. He'll spend hours on each carburetor as though it were his own. Part of Granger's pay for this is largely salaried from the surprising reaction just about everyone displays when they pick up their finished carb. Sure, for the first few years of his carburetor shop's existence he'd have a few cynics a week attempt to set him straight, explaining that electronic fuel injection very shortly would kill his trade. As always, though, he followed his heart and today he has built quite a following based entirely around old Holleys, Q-jets, Demons, Edelbrocks, and even a few Strombergs.
