Edelbrock Pro-Flo EFI System - Go With The FLO
With the control module set to Base Timing On, D&P set the car to the specified 10 degrees of timing. We can't go into all the other procedural details in this space, but we will say this: We were able to drive the car away that day.
Later on we met up with Edelbrock's Terry Abercrombie for a little extra tuning. He pulled the calibration module out to the engine bay (there's plenty of cord for this), and kept an eye on idle rpm as he manually adjusted the speed at the throttle body.
Why the gymnastics? The engine's actual idle rpm needs to closely match the system's target rpm, which it does in this shot. The throttle position sensor will need to be reset to its specified 13 degrees, but otherwise the tuning can proceed.
One of the best things we learned from Abercrombie was how to use the Global fuel modifier. In our case, we had added as much fuel as we could throughout the 24 cells but were still coming up lean. The Global function permits the user to move the entire scale up, allowing more fuel to be added. The green light indicates we're running rich-not spot on, but better than lean.
Here's the color we were looking for. The amber light indicates that our mixture is on the money at this particular rpm. This is why tuning is best done with a partner-one to drive, one to monitor and adjust the calibration module. Spending some time at this process, noting problem areas then fixing them, will result in a well-tuned system. Teamwork also avoids one of the hazards of solo tuning-crashing.
