The Box
The Second Strike ignition box uses the OE inductive-style timing pick-up and inductive-spark system to fire the cylinder with a strong low-rpm spark. As the rpm of the engine increases, the Second Strike box has the ability to introduce a second CD spark during the engine tuner's predetermined timing cycle. Since the Second Strike box uses a completely independent CD spark to fire the cylinder, it can be introduced at any time using a Crank Angle Offset (CAO) dial built into the box. Pertronix engineers have set this option up to work from the engine's total timing setting.
For example, if a high-performance engine were set to run with 30 degreesof total timing advance, the CAO wheel can be set to deliver a second spark 2-18 degrees after the total spark timing occurs. Each marking on the CAO wheel represents 2 degrees, making it useful for engine tuners to introduce more or less spark intensity at varying load-related rpm points. Along with the CAO option, the Second Strike box also features a built-in rev limiter that carefully cuts firing in a random/sequential firing method. Random spark stealing is the quickest, most efficient way to deplete engine power until a sequential firing order can be employed to safely control the engine. By firing the engine's ignition system in a sequential spark-stealing order, engine speed is reduced dramatically until the predetermined maximum rpm level is reached. As for the third dial on the side of the Second Strike ignition box, it allows users to choose from four, six, and eight cylinders of four-stroke operation. With the ability to piggyback the original ID system, this box can be swapped from multiple engine applications if so desired.
Testing
So how well does the Second Strike box perform in the real world? We turned to our mule for the day, a potent street-prowling '70 Camaro, and Westech Performance's chassis dyno to find out just how much a hotter spark would be worth at the rear wheels, if anything at all.
After three separate days of testing, our Second Strike ignition box helped the Camaro break its 300-rwhp barrier. An extra 12 rear-wheel horsepower and 14 lb-ft of torque at the wheels definitely added some grunt to our ride. | The Second Strike box is insulated from heat and can be mounted in just about any position. Its 6x3-inch dimensions make the installation process a breeze. | Installing a Second Strike ignition box is as easy as hooking up five wires. Pertronix supplies each box with premade wire connections and extra matching ends for the intended vehicle. |
