The cap grinder removes casting irregularities from one cheek of each cap, making it perfectly flat so subsequent machining operations are accurate. The cap in the background had been faced; note how smooth it is compared to the as-cast cheek. A skim cut of 0.005 inch is usually enough to ensure flatness. View Related Article
