EZ Wiper Off
Removing a set of wiper arms can be a little tricky. This is because the female-splined mounting area inside the base of the arm (socket) uses a hidden tang to apply side pressure against the male-splined pivot. If the arm is improperly removed with a makeshift tool, such as a pair of common pliers, the wiper arm's finish-or your paint-can become scratched. Instead of running this risk, use a wiper-arm tool the first time. They're easy to find and inexpensive.
Wiper-arm tools are available either from many auto parts stores or online. The tool (shown in hand) is from Snap-on (PN A192) and allows both removal and installation of the wiper arm. This tool is currently listed for $8.85 at snapon.com. The second style (also shown) is a K-D tool (PN SER 2039) with a squeeze handle. It's available from many auto-parts stores, or at napaonline.com for $15.39. This second tool works only to remove the wiper arm.
This Snap-on tool makes quick work out of removing and installing wiper arms without scratching the arm or the car's paint.
The systems are available... The systems are available for all Chevelles from '64 through '72. Because these production-model years used a variety of wiper systems, DSE offers eight separate part numbers to directly fit your Chevelle. Some '68-72 Chevelles were equipped with an optional hidden-wiper (recessed) system. Recessed wipers reside below the rear lower edge of the hood when turned off (parked). The kit installed for this story is for a '68-72 Chevelle with the recessed wipers (PN 121609). Kits are also available for '67-69 Camaros. | The original, bulky wiper... The original, bulky wiper motor takes up lots of space under the hood of a Chevelle and typically offers just two wiper speeds. Before removing the factory motor, the negative battery cable was removed and the wiper linkage was disconnected through the upper cowl area. On '64-67 models, the upper cowl area is the painted grille just ahead of the lower portion of the windshield and below the wipers. | The original wiper arms are... The original wiper arms are retained for the new Selecta-Speed system. These match the size and shape of a Chevelle's front windshield (during operation) and are a unique four-link system developed by GM engineers. This design also enables the blades to be correctly parked in a level position. |
