The spring-loaded air doors on a Quadrajet have to be pulled open by the motor; if the motor doesn't need it, the doors won't be opened. This feature keeps air speed up, which helps drivability and torque. If they don't open when needed, the engine will labor under load; if they open too soon, you'll find out why some wags call these things Quadrabogs. A light to moderate resistance should be about right.
