Magna Charger - Magna Charged
The Magna Charger system is an integrated piece that also works as the manifold, making the installation a snap and only requiring eight bolts to secure it.
For good measure, we applied a bit of antiseize to the bolts. The longer bolts run closer to the center of the motor, while the shorter bolts thread toward the outside.
With a calibrated torque wrench, we torqued the bolts in the standard center-out pattern. According to the instructions, Magna Charger recommends the bolts be torqued to 21 ft-lb.
Magna Charger includes a 7.50-inch lower crank pulley machined to fit inside your stock pulley (arrow). To mount it, we used the supplied three outer bolts with washers and torqued them to 33 ft-lb, while the center crank bolt with washer was torqued to 60 ft-lb.
Vacuum tubes serve to reference boost. They can also be used to provide a signal to a boost timing control module, such as an MSD 6A BTM or equivalent.
The bypass mechanism is clever in that it prevents the supercharger from making boost by equalizing the pressure above and below the rotors. When heavy throttle is applied and vacuum is reduced, the bypass valve either closes or begins to close. Boost is then able to accumulate in the manifold. In cruising situations, the valve opens, which ceases the blower from making boost. This bypass valve has proved successful and is of the same design used by GM on some factory-installed blowers.
The air/fuel ratio on the 825-cfm Demon was finally optimized by squaring it with 96 jets, while final timing was set at 31 degrees total. Suffice to say, the little Mouse was happy and safe here, generating a broad powerband.
Proper belt wrap is crucial for making boost. A belt that's too loose will slip on the pulley and will subsequently lose boost as the rpm increase, giving it potential to fly off. While more surface area for the belt to grab is better, you need to make sure you don't overtighten it either. Simply slide the belt tensioner over and make sure it's snug. If you still aren't sure, then call Magna Charger's help line directly.
