We changed directions to give FrankenRat a set of World Products Merlin 269cc oval-port heads just to see what kind of torque we could make with a more conservative set of heads on the 454.

The World Products Merlin oval ports sport a 119cc chamber and a set of 2.30/1.88-inch intake and exhaust valves. The Merlin heads also require a special head-bolt set because of the raised exhaust ports that demand four longer ARP head bolts.

The oval ports measure 269 cc as opposed to the monstrous 310cc rectangle-port Merlins (roughly 13 percent smaller). Here, we've laid a Fel-Pro rectangle-port gasket over the oval-port face so you can see the port entry difference.

We went back to the smaller of the two Crane hydraulic-roller cams for the Gen VI block in order to increase torque. The step on the nose of the cam accommodates the cam thrust plate on the front of the block.

Valvesprings again played a big part in the dyno testing since we continue to struggle to control the valves, even at a paltry 5,700 rpm. The difficulty lies in controlling big valves and large hydraulic-roller lifters without going overboard on spring pressure.

We tried both 1.7 and 1.8:1 Crane Gold Race roller rockers, but again the higher ratio created valve-control problems, even with stiffer springs. Since it's not smart to change the length of the rocker to the valve, the easiest way to change rocker ratio is to move the pushrod cup closer to the rocker stud. The rocker on the left is the 1.8:1 rocker.

Ed Taylor pre-fit the intake gaskets and found a slight mismatch, so he match-ported the intake ports to the gaskets. This is probably not worth any significant power, but we spent time on it anyway.

Since we've changed to oval-port heads, we pulled out our trusty Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap oval-port intake that we matched up with a Barry Grant 825-cfm mechanical-secondary carburetor. This is a Race Demon, but a Mighty Demon would work just as well for a lot less.

Ed Taylor performed all the dyno testing at Ken Duttweiler's dyno shop. The Rat didn't make nearly the horsepower, but made up for it with outstanding torque that would make this engine a great mild street Rat. We retained the Hedman 13/4-inch headers and Borla muffled exhaust. The valve covers are outstanding cast covers from PML that are also offered in a nostalgic Corvette script version as well.
