D&D's New T56 Six-Speed Just Made Retrofitting Easy
By Jeff Smith

This D&D Viper six-speed will bolt into any '60s or '70s Chevy using stock clutch and mechanical linkage. The only changes required include a shortened driveshaft and relocating the trans crossmember. The key is the 1/2-inch steel adapter plate bolted to the front of the transmission. D&D rates the torque capacity of this trans at 550 lb-ft.

Here's a simple comparison of the D&D T56 and the Richmond (Super T10) four-speed we removed from the Chevelle. The T56 is almost exactly 5 inches longer than the Richmond four-speed and weighs 140 pounds versus around 70 for a Muncie or the Richmond Super T10.

D&D fits a custom-cast extension housing that includes a provision to use a GM-style mechanical speedometer drive (arrow a) and a GM trans mount (arrow b). The shifter on this trans sits 2 inches farther forward than a typical LT1-style T56 trans.

Removed from the transmission, the adapter plate mounts a stock T5 front bearing-retainer collar (arrow).

This adapter plate is located on the transmission with 1/4-inch dowel pins (arrow).

The adapter plate bolts to the bellhousing using the bearing-retainer collar to align with the bellhousing. This accurately positions the transmission input shaft. The plate uses four supplied countersunk Allen-head bolts to mount to the bellhousing.

This is a comparison of the smaller 27-spline Camaro output shaft (right) to the 30-spline Viper shaft (left). The D&D trans uses the larger Viper output shaft that requires a Mopar Hemi slip yoke from Denny's Driveshafts.

The first time we tried mounting the trans in the car, we discovered we had to remove two small tooling locating pins located at the top of both sides of the trans to clear the floor. D&D will now trim these pieces for you. We also had to hammer-clearance the Chevelle floor in roughly the 11-o'clock position as viewed from the rear.
148 0305 T56 8 Z
With the trans in the car, we measured for a new driveshaft using the directions listed on the Denny's Driveshaft's Web site and ordered a 3-inch Nitrous-Ready steel driveshaft complete with a Hemi Viper 30-spline yoke, larger 1350-style U-joints, and a new 12-bolt yoke to mount the larger U-joints. Because we followed the directions, measured carefully, and double-checked our measurements, the driveshaft fit perfectly.
148 0305 T56 9 Z
We removed the shifter and the reverse-lockout solenoid from the trans while test-fitting the trans in the car. We had already cut a substantial hole in the floor for the Richmond four-speed trans and shifter but still had to extend the opening roughly 2 inches rearward to clear the T56 shifter stand.
148 0305 T56 10 Z
D&D supplied this T56 with one of their optional shifters and an aluminum handle that actually placed the shifter a little too far to the rear for our liking. A straight stick would probably work best. The D&D shifter uses a Mustang T5 two-bolt pattern for the stick.
148 0305 T56 11 Z
D&D completely blueprints the Viper T56, which includes a steel 3-4 shift fork and carbon-fiber blocker rings. These pieces should be used to upgrade a Camaro T56 box, which comes with weaker blocker rings and a crack-prone aluminum 3-4 shift fork.
148 0305 T56 12 Z
All T56 transmissions use the latest version Dexron III automatic trans fluid. We chose to install Royal Purple's latest synthetic Max ATF fluid.
