We nicknamed our original 355 Daffy, but it proved us wrong by cranking out an impressive 393 lb-ft of torque and 327 hp with pocket-ported iron heads, a Performer intake, a set of 1-5/8-inch Hedman headers, a 650-cfm Quick Fuel carburetor, and a Performance Distributor HEI as baseline power numbers.

The Quick Fuel 650 carb is a vacuum-secondary Holley treated to some simple tricks, and it makes great power for its size.

The iron heads were subjected to a simple pocket-porting job performed by Todd McKenzie at McKenzie Cylinder heads back during the buildup of our Goodwrench 350 engine.

We retained the 1.94/1.50-inch valves and added a 30-degree back-cut to the exhaust valves.

Next on the hop-up list was an Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap intake and a slightly larger 750-cfm double-pumper Holley carburetor that was worth both torque and horsepower, but clearly we needed both better heads and a bigger cam.

Airflow Research offers several small-block heads with 23-degree valve angles. In fact, the 180cc heads are the smallest intake port AFR offers. But despite their diminutive dimensions, these heads offer flow numbers that are superior to heads with much larger ports.

We opted for the smaller 68cc chamber (a 74cc chamber is also available) to keep the compression up. The 180 heads come with 2.02/1.60-inch stainless steel valves, but the real effort is all in the port design.

We also retired the stock head bolts and added a set from ARP to ensure that the Fel-Pro head gaskets would seal up nicely and we wouldn't have to worry about pulling threads out of the block when we torqued the heads down.

We tried an Edelbrock Victor Jr. single-plane but lost too much torque to justify using it on this application.

Final power pulls at Duttweiler's dyno delivered some excellent power numbers with a peak of 425 hp at 5,800 and max torque of 440 lb-ft at 4,600 rpm. Those numbers are worth 12-second times in any decent street car.
