The basis for our small-block was a used 383 short-block built with a cast Scat 3.75-inch-stroke crank and 0.030-over Probe flat-top Factory Performance series pistons. Rods were stock Chevrolet 5.7-inch units.

We installed a Competition Cams XE 274 hydraulic-lifter cam, which specs out at 230/236 degrees at 0.050-inch lift, and delivers 0.487/0.490-inch lift. The cam is ground on a 110-degree lobe separation.

The cam was driven by Crane's premium three-piece timing set, which features multiple keyways on the crank gear to set the cam's installed centerline. We degreed ours in at 106 degrees intake centerline. The stock timing cover was biffed in favor of a Comp three-piece unit. This billet ring bolts to the block to accept the front oil-pan seal, so there's no need to disturb the seal to get to the cam.

The Mighty Demon features the radiused and streamlined chokeless air entry normally seen on Race Demon carbs. Note the replaceable air bleeds in the Mighty Demon--a definite aid to tuning.

Ignition was provided by an MSD distributor and wires coupled to the dyno's MSD ignition box. The MSD distributor makes for easy modifications to the spark curve.

When everything was said and done, our basic iron 383 delivered 411 hp and 431 lb-ft of torque; both figures were recorded at very reasonable rpm. The combination easily exceeded our goal of 400 hp.
