When choosing a camshaft, consider both compression ratio and piston-to-valve clearance. Cams with longer duration can typically use more compression because the valves will stay open longer.
This cutaway shot demonstrates what a roller lifter looks like in operation. The wheels at the base of the lifter not only provide reduced friction, but also allow a more aggressive camshaft profile, which translates into more power.
A longer-duration camshaft will raise the powerband and rpm range. To optimize this, lower rear-axle ratios can provide better acceleration with the new camshaft.
Your stock springs work well for a daily driver with a low-lift cam, but when adding a higher lift camshaft, install the new springs designed specifically for it.
If you've added a stouter camshaft, you may want to retune your carburetor for optimal power.
As engine technology progresses, so does camshaft design. Perhaps the high-lift camshaft you installed years ago does not work as well as the camshafts available today. Check out what's new. You may find that there is still more power to gain from your engine with a new bumpstick.
