Flex fans like this may be easy to install, but they do consume power to turn. That's because a mechanical fan is always turning and draining engine power, while electric fans only turn on when needed and do not require mechanical power to operate. The ABS plastic shroud (shown) is an aftermarket item used to direct air out of the radiator. At idle and low speeds, a mechanical fan slows down with engine rpm and decreases airflow.
