Hye-Tech Performance offers this 0.030-inch-over short-block, machined and balanced with OE rebuilt parts for $900. We held the engine below 6,000 rpm and had no problems at all. If a power-adder was in the plans, Hye-Tech offers an upgraded version as well.

Keeping the parts lubricated and windage-free is a big deal when it comes to making horsepower. We used this deep-sump 7-quart pan, and a windage tray, along with a standard-volume oil pump and pick up and 30-weight oil.

The Crane Cams PorwerMax hydraulic roller camshaft featured 0.509/0.528-inch intake and exhaust valve lifts combined with 222/230 degrees of duration at 0.050-inch measurements. The well-mannered street piece ran great on pump gas and pulled a decent amount of vacuum as well, thanks to the 112-degree LSA.

Whether changing heads is in the future or superior seal around the cylinder is key, Fel-Pro offers it new line of MLS (multi-layered steel) gaskets. We ran all the heads across one set of head gaskets and did nothing other than wipe them down between rounds.

When it comes to strong, durable fasteners, ARP leads the high-performance industry. Its pieces provide insurance for harmonic dampeners, cylinder heads, intake manifolds, and anywhere else there is a tapped hole.

Every company makes its roller rockers differently. We found the Comp Cams self-guided roller rockers to work well when changing from one valvespring retainer to another between heads. Their narrow body construction fits well under tightly spaced valve covers.

Keeping vibration out and power in was up to our Professional Products harmonic dampener. This piece is reasonably priced and looks good.

We first tried a 650-cfm Speed Demon, but after reading the airflow our little Mouse was ingesting, we swapped it for a 750-cfm version. On the very next pull we watched the average power numbers climb by 3 hp and2 lb-ft of torque.

The key to making a 10:1 compression cast-iron head motor run well on 91-octane fuel lies within the spark curve. Our Pertronix distributor used a slow advance curve to keep timing out of the cylinder while the engine was under a load at low engine speeds.
