Cutting a stock coil spring will increase its spring rate. Removing one coil will increase the rate by 10 percent, two coils by 20 percent. As the spring rate is increased, the ride becomes more harsh, and the suspension is more susceptible to bottoming out. A general rule of thumb when cutting a spring is, for every half-coil cut, a 1-inch suspension drop will result. View Related Article
